A classical walk is leading around the Gosaukamm. You
should be an experienced walker and free of giddiness, and, you should
be in good shape because you have to count with 8 hours of walking.
The walk starts at Gosau at the lake Gosausee. You could either walk
clockwise or counter-clockwise. It depends on you. If it is not too
hot, I would recommend to walk first to Steiglpaß. This has
the advantage that you can start early because you don´t have
to wait till the cable car will be opened. Another advantage is that
you can go down by cable car at the end of the day, when you are starting
get tired after the long walk. Please notice that the last ride down
is about 5 o´clock.
Towards Steiglpaß first you cross over two couloirs. Then you
are entering the wood. At
Scharwandhütte, which you reach within 50-60 minutes, the wood
is thining of and you are getting very close to the mountains.
30 minutes later we reach a small chapel at Hinterer Scharwandalm,
which should remind on the mountaineers who died on the mountains
of Gosaukamm. It was built by a mother who lost her young daughter
in the mountains of Gosaukamm.
Reaching Steiglpaß means that we are on the highest point of
our walk. It is the border between the Upper Austria district and
the district of Salzburg. At Steiglpaß famous Bischofsmütze
is very close. The eastern side of Bischofsmütze, which we watch
from Steiglpass is looking a kind of yellow. 1993 and 1994, there
were two huge rock-slips and tons of rocks came down. At that moment
there were even climbers on the top on Bischofsmütze, but like
a wonder noone was killed or injured.
With the Steiglpaß we have nearly also reached the most southern
part of Gosaukamm. Now the path is going down to Hofpürglhütte,
a mountain hut which lies directly under the walls of Bischofsmütze.
The scenery now is getting smoother.
Hofpürglhütte is just the middle of the way around Gosaukamm.
Here you have the first possibility to get something to drink. Around
Gosaukamm there are nearly no springs because the chalk and the socalled
karst is full of holes and can´t hold the water.
The next goal we are heading to is Stuhlalm from where we can see
the impressive north wall of Bischofsmütze. Leaving Hofpürglhut
at 1700 m we will arrive at Stuhlalm at 1460 m. The landscape now
is n ot that rocky as up to Steiglpass, it is more an alpe. So you
can see a lot of cows at "Krautgarten". At "Jöchl"
the path is going down about 150 metres. Another 30 minutes and we
will reach Stuhlalm. We can either take a rest at "Theodor Körner
hut", which has a nice terrace where we can see perfectly Bischofsmütze,
or we stop at "Stuhlalm". Above Stuhlalm Angerstein is looking
down. Stuhlalm is a very nice place but remember that the last cable
car down to Gosausee is at 5 o´clock. If you don´t get
it, you have to walk down.
1 ½ - 2 hours we still have to go. In summer it can be hot
in the afternoonsun.
Passing the Törleck Dachstein emerges again in front of us, perfect
light on the glaciar. It is photo time to take the best pictures of
Dachstein. We are now back in Upper Austria. Depending how fast you
were going, 7 to 9 hours we have walked that day. If there is still
some time we stop at Breininghut at Paul and Rosi.
